Assume it's a decent fake.

A very small amount actually. I worked in a store that had working cameras in plain view and most professional shoplifters are so fast, the slight of hand so practiced, even on film it's hard to catch.

Then there was the guys who loaded a shopping cart to the brim, pushed it out the fire exit and while the alarm was blaring, loaded the WHOLE cart into a van then sped off.

Your parents are right and it's their house. I rcommend the D-Link 930L or 932L or better, which will monitor live, and email motion-sensed photos which you can all check. Cover your entrances and main living spaces indoors. There are other choices for outdoor cams. Burglars might just avoid residences they see with cameras. If you put cams in your private spaces, make them private with confidential passwords. Burglary has become a big business and is being organized. Police are not very helpful after your stuff is gone and suspects are unknown. Install security alarm and monitor and choose a reputable company which will provide 24 hour service. Burglars these days make sure you are not home when they smash in the door and ransack the bedrooms where they're most likely to find your money and jewelry, then run off. They are very quick when they do this. Often police arrest residents when the homeowner tries to apprehend burglars, charging the resident with gun or other weapon charges- they take th e"low hanging fruit". You wind up assaulted by crooks and law enforcement.

Maybe 10-20%. I work in retail and shoplifters think they are so good at what they do. I dont believe fake cameras would deter them much.

Over 80% of shoplifters are employees, so it wouldn't be a good deterant at all since the employees would know that it's a fake.

Fake cameras would not deter a thief as REAL cameras do not deter them either. A person who will steal will steal no matter if there is a real or fake camera in a store.

Just walk out of the way of it or if its a small store and you know no one is watching it then probably none.
I worked LP at Sears everyone knew they had cameras but they did it anyways. Most also knew we couldn't touch them and all we could pretty much do was call the cops or get someone gullible enough to put on the cuffs and come with us.

Generally speaking, they aren't even deterred by the REAL cameras...

Probably none, as most of them do it because:-

1. they can,

2. they do it for the thrill

3. they do it out of need

4. they don't realise the consequences can follow them for life.
