Change the drive. The computer only knows that the commands it is sending to the drive are not coming back with the right information. Swap out the drive with a new one. Floppy drives can go bad very quickly and with no warning. First thing to do is to make sure that the drive power connector is in fact connected to the drive. Some one might be trying to play a joke on you. If that is not the issue, replace it, as stated. The computer OS is not likely to single out a certain drive to cause it to be unusable on a "whim". One other thing, check the set up files to be sure that the floppy is turned on there.

There may be a little lock that's plastic, slide it up to the unlock position. Or try opening the floppy disk from another computer.

"Ineedhelp" is right - I forgot about the lock. It is easy to accidentally slide the lock into locking position.
Also, check the device driver:
cl Start
cl Settings
cl Control Panel
cl System
cl Hardware
cl Device Driver
R-cl on the item to be checked. Click Properties.
That will tell you if the item is working properly.
