Middle East have seen war and violence probably long before you were born. And Chinese are not helping North Korea. They're the one who cut off major fuel supply to North Korea when they tested nuke so they come back to negotiation table. 'Little' wars have been going on for long not just recently. The US have probably been involved in some military action almost every year. All the talk with ww3 is vast generalization by people who just started watching news on TV and figured out how to use internet and don't understand the history.

Nuclear weapons are not the thing to be feared...
The fact of the matter is any small country starting such a war would probably be quickly obliterated and the net result would not alter the course of history much.
The real worry is the demise of real religion (and i dont mean the evangelistic, self indulgent rubbish that gets people shouting on the streets), has left a hole in the human races' psyche. The rise of scientific belief that can actually perform miracles was innevitable going to bring this about.
unfortunately humans arn't developed enough to know what to do without a religeous body telling them, so the west has adopted Capitalism and consumerism as its guiding light and the other parts of the globe have followed or have gone backward to fundentalist beliefs. So the corporate body now rules the world more than ever, under-classes are growing everywhere, and we all concentrate on making our bodies wrinkle free, and wearing the latest fashions, whilst our minds become wasted and stagnant. thats the real worry, the waste of an entire race.

Nah, world war 3 is not coming because of the disparity in capability and reach of the nations you mentioned. It would be intense but very localised conflict, unless you consider terrorist attacks. What would need to happen for WW3 would be events similar to that of WW2. That is, a sudden division in western powers left and right politically and massive ideological shift.
We don't all get along because that is the nature of species. To compete and propagate. As for Switzerland: ultimately, the see no evil, hear no evil approach will bite you in the ***. Imagine if Britain (and Commonwealth states) had accepted the German invasion of Poland, or if the US had maintained an isolationist policy/hadn't been attacked at Pearl Harbour. Europe, including the Swiss would have been annexed, changed politically and socially beyond recognition (could you live with a total erosion of your rights?) or made into a puppet regime. Sometimes there is the need to fight for what one believes in and a necessary evil. Its just there's a time and a place, and recently there has been some pretty bad judgement calls and motives for conflict.
Good question though and its nice to see someone who has an understanding of global politics.
PS Iranian nuclear ambition is scary. N Korea have secular motives (oil, money and etc) but the Iranians will will use them for spiritual and racial reasons against Israel. Truly frightening.

There have been "little" wars for as long as there have been human beings. A "world" war is simply one in which there are several wars at the same time over much of the world. The opposing forces may or may not be formally allied.
There have always been wars over religion, even more so with the advent of monotheistic religions.
Any place where trade routes meet is going to be in a continual state of tension since control of trade routes also gives a lot of control over all the trading partners which use it. Even today, much of the world's trade goes through the Red Sea, the Suez Canal and/or the Straits of Hormuz.
Why don't we just all get along? Because we are human beings with all of our strengths and weaknesses. Why do good families have rotten kids? Why do the poorest and meanest of families still produce people who make major contributions? Every new person is a toss of the genetic dice and personality is pretty much half nature and half nurture. Any human society that tries to ignore this fact is doomed to fail. There is no magic potion, no miracle cure to the human condition. The best we can do is to set up societies which minimize the damage any particular person or group can do to the rest of us.
The idea of governments with built-in limits produced one of the greatest eras of human well being that we have ever known. Unfortunately, the self limiting features such as the divisions of power in many western countries have been gotten around more and more, such as when you hear a president telling the AG to "find a way around the Constitution" (Clinton) or getting away with flatly stating up front that he has no intention of enforcing the law as written that he just signed (Bush W).

I wish we could get along, but that is never gonna happen! I say we be like Switzerland, be neutral, you'll never get in trouble then. Or maybe we could put all the leaders onto an island and they can have some kind of war games. Everybody interested in war on one side of the world, everybody else on the other. They can take the East and we can take the west. Sorted innit! Yep that would be my first move as Queen of the universe.
But seriously, we should leave the middle east to their own devices. I think we should offer people a way out if they want no part in the trouble. We get suicide bombers and terrorism because we medel. I don't know why we do it, if it is for oil or money (which I really don't know if it is) then we should stop being such a materialistic society, it causes nothing but trouble. Lets go and live in a commune, in Switzerland maybe?? = )

Doubt any of the big players are going to make a move as no one has more nuclear warheads than the US. It's human nature to make the little space that we all share a right mess, but never despair..on a serious note though, if ww3 were to occur the environmental spillovers would be detrimental to even countries and continents that were not the origin or recipient of the nuclear weaponry etc, hence ww3 is impractical, but is carrying on in the present state also practical? presumably yes if no one travels out to the little war zones and everyone ignores the race/religious propaganda and of course ignored northkorea.

Dear Ashley Hall, Dehra Dun What follows is just my personal view point out of my limited knowledge as I too think on the same lines often. This involves seeing through future and how it probably works. Your question is very correct and has a lot of bearing on human survival on this planet. Nature has a cycle once there were dinosaurs now there are none. Many species of animal, insect, plant life keep getting endangered and reach extiction. Life goes on from 1st world war to the 2nd then there is a 3d war on against no one in particular except what is apparent Chritianity and Islam.
Human intelligence capacity and energy transformation is such that some have the vision like Nostradamus who have predicted a 3rd war before 2010 and it's origin lies in Persia(Iran) and had a vision of an Ayatolla Khomeini a blue turbaned fellow an enemy of Israel who out of a false propaganda will encourage Iran to shoot off a few nukes into Israel starting a chain of nuclear bombs preceded by four simultaneous bombs in NYC,LON, Par and Tyo. I am a staunch believer in astrology as nature has it's own management system and it is best governed by natural waves called Maha Dasha(Large sine curve) in Hindu philosophy
within which are smaller sine curves called Anter Dashas. It is like watching a spring powered watch which has small cranks moving each one in different proportion. This even gives birth to sciences like astro medicine. When a person in his life time was supposed to be hurt on a right side limb or a left sided limb etc. As per astrological forcasts by Hindu astrologers too probabilities of the above are strong BUT not confirmed. Have rocket will travel-have a bomb and it must explode!! People of Islamic origin feel wronged by the Christans by forcing a jewish state on their land!!
Look at your hand one side is fair the other comparatively darker
it takes negative and positive to make a world. Humans will be most intelligent if they thought of coplaints o others and diplomatically resolved them. The muslims feel hurt so due attention should have been given to their grievances and should not have been bombed. Now enemity has grown beyond proposrtions and not easy to contain till the bubble bursts UNLESS another Jesus/Guru/Mohammed is suddenly born who with his one man army like Mahatma Gandhiand control peoples' minds.

I don't know where we all came from, (originally, from the beginning of time), but we are all here now...We merely borrow this Earth for the short time we are on it, and yet we keep taking from it was does not belong to us...The uranium, oil from the ground, whatever "Man" decides it has to have be it nuclear weapons or gasoline etc......We are single handedly destroying what does not BELONG to us, so the idea of a Nuclear war is absurd, and crazy beyond words.....You don't like me, I don't like you, so lets kill each other...F'N CRAZY!!!!!

There is no chance of a big war. There is only one big power which has not imperialist approach and is concerned with safety and prosperity of its people. The problems have already been there. Now there is great public awareness. Let us hope for the better.
