That's like asking "Why is my car's acceleration not what it used to be?"

If I don't know what kind of car you drive or how old it is, how am I going to even come close to giving you a good answer? You've got to provide details. The same goes for any subject including computers. Buying more RAM like everyone is suggesting only goes so far. If there's a problem like the ones listed below, having more RAM isn't going to do squat.

----------------------
PC's become slow for many reasons:

1) You install a lot of software over the years, some of which load with Windows. The more you have loading with Windows, the slower it runs and boots.

2) You install new software that has high system requirements, causing your PC to crawl when it's running.

3) You bought a PC that barely met the minimum standard of speed, and it didn't take long before you installed something that brought it to its knees.

4) The hardware possilibities - low amount of RAM, dying hard drive, slow CPU, dying power supply, etc.

5) The Windows possibility - infected with spyware/adware that eats up resources, corrupt setting in Windows causing issues, or the registry is full of junk that is no longer used.

6) The Network possibility - Windows is spending a long time during bootup looking for a network connection, or perhaps your network is slow to begin with.

...

As you can see, the list goes on and on. I can tell you that when Windows is in decent shape, it shouldn't take longer than 1-2 minutes to boot. In fact, most PC's over 2GHz in speed can boot all the way to the desktop in less than 45 seconds when using a fresh install of Windows.

You may have too many things checked off to load at startup. Click your start button click run type msconfig then you should see a screen pop up there will be tabs at the top of that page. click on the tab that says start up on the right hand side. There you will see all these files and the ones with checks are the ones that load at startup. Uncheck the ones that you don't need to load all the time like Real player and AIM AOL. Just make sure you don't uncheck anything that is a system file like IE or your anti virus rundell32 systemtray, systemmonitor, taskmonitor, loadpowerprofile, Read carefully what you are unchecking. Then your computer will have to restart. Remember not to uncheck anything if you don't know what it is but it should be easy to read what they do. Good luck and I'm not responsible for any damage.

Preassigned programs that you have asked it to perform might be one cause. I think the most likely cause would be a virus, or more, and spyware that is running once the machine tries to start. Get yourself a boot disk, and start the computer with that. From that point, using a boot disk, if you can run the Internet program, go get the free copy of AVG, download it, and run it. If it finds any kind of virus, it will knock it out for you. You also need a good anti-spyware program. Load it as well and let it do it's thing. You also need to make sure that your Registry has not been altered. A common name for that software is "Reg-fix". Good luck, and get these programs and keep them on your computer. Any of these types of programs can slip in from almost anything. When you "make love" with the Internet or a disk that you do not know where it came from, be sure your computer has a "glove", or don't let it make "love",

Usually because there's too many programmes set to load @ Start-up.
Go into START > Run > MsConfig to see what you can disable

Also try running SCANDISK + Defragmenter

Finally, try using the online system optimisation scan @ http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/ to find anything else that could cause it.

The only thing that I can think of is that your RAM is just a little bit too small. You might want to consider deleting some unneeded items or buying a larger RAM.
