The Platinum card is probably overkill unless you run a business or make well over six figures. Some of the perks are fantastic (buy one business class air fare and get another one free, upgrades, reservations, concierge service, etc.) but unless you're constantly traveling or staying in hotels you'll probably find that the fee just isn't worth it. The Gold card, on the other hand, may be more your speed. You don't get as many freebies with the Gold card but Amex is constantly doing little things for cardholders. For example, they just rolled out a new service that is essentially a free AAA membership and they did it at absolutely no charge.

The best thing about Amex cards is how good they look on your credit score. If you can hang on to an Amex card for a couple of years it's like having a gold star and a note saying "Give 'em whatever they want!" in your file.

Any card that charges a yearly fee is not worth it. The only time I wish I had an American Express card is when I want to buy tickets through TicketMaster for upcoming events. How stupid that is the only credit card they take. There are places that don't accept AE only Visa or Master Charge so you will need another card anyway. American Express expects you to pay off your balance monthly which is a good idea but why pay a fee for it. There are other cards out there that have low interest rates if your credit is good and don't charge annual fees. Why would you want one?
