Train would be more fun for me. But Malaysian trains can be a journey through hell. Take a overnight 3rd class train and you'll have stories to tell your grand-children. But that is more than 30 years ago and maybe conditions has improved. On the other hand, their terminals in KL and SIN look dilapilated still.

Best choice is to go by bus, Transtar I heard is good. I took 'Nice' which did not live up to its name. Go to Golden Mile complex, you can take overnight coaches to all parts of Malaysian and even up to Southern Thailand.

Train is dangerous because its raining heavily recently and a couple of derail happens. Bus is faster and also dangerous because the driver might be on drugs , sleepy or driving without license. Try Transnasional or Plusliner from Bus main station or local travel agent.

train, if another option is bus.
yes, take a night train, with bed - it's safer, more comfort

-edit-
Unnga, ktm has improved a lot. no more 3rd class coach. coaches fully aircond, all seats numbered. theres a lot more. do 'try it again for the first time'.

It really depends on your preferences. Both are readily available. Trains are slightly cheaper to buses. Buses are airconditioned (could be crucial depending when you travel) but tend to pricey. Another factor to consider is timeliness. Buses are most likely to be late because of traffic on the road
