If you don't list it on your resume, no employer is going to take the time to find this type of information out. It would require doing a law enforcement type of background check. However, there will be a missing time period on your resume. You might get questioned about it. It looks strange when you look at a resume and see a period of no employment.

It shows up on your tax records, which they can get from the IRS.
If you only worked there for a few weeks, it's okay. Don't put it on your resume, and if it comes up, just say you didn't want to talk about it. Most employers understand a "bad idea" job story.
But if you worked there for longer than a month, it will be an issue. They'll be thinking, "it looks like he was unemployed for all that time...what happened?". You can lie about a job you had for a week. But not about a job you kept for a year.
If the latter is the case, then simply come clean. Tell them you were fired (no details up front), and then if they press you for a reason, tell them it was wrongly done. Again, most employers will give you a break, as getting fired is something that happens.
But trust your gut. It's better to be honest now, than to lose an chance because they caught you in a lie.

what? people always read resumes. it's how you learn more about a prospective employee. its not "dead history" it is a list of a persons relevant skills and experience. i would never hire someone without one, no one in their right mind would.

Unless you list an organization in your resume, no employer will know where you have worked. As a result they cannot find out your work history unless you decided to let them know about it.
