I was 21 when I came out to my parents. It didn't go well at all, but we were never close to begin with.

(Keep in mind that coming out is a lifelong process. When new people enter your life, you will need to decide whether or not to come out to them.... so technically, you are never done coming out.)

Yes, some people won't understand, and may even hate you... but personally, I prefer that people hate the real me instead of liking some fake version of me.

One more piece of advice: If you lose any friends when you come out, it means they were never really very good friends to begin with. You may not feel that way right away, but I'm pretty sure you will eventually.

I wish you the best of luck with your coming out! Believe me when I say that life outside the closet is MUCH better.

I was outed by my little brother when he brought home half of his high school football team when I was 19. They walked into the house when I was making out with my partner and was too busy to notice. Oh well, cat was out of the bag then, but my Dad and my brothers knew, now the whole freaking town knew. It was a big deal for about 5 minutes.

I was 16 when I came out to myself. I had been struggling with it for awhile then. But I never quite came out to the public until I met my first love. Which was the next year. I told a few of my friends and they managed to hook me up with her :) God I loved her. She was amazing. Well anyways.

My best friend just came out to me two days ago and he's sixteen, but he's not coming out to anyone else for another couple years because of family issues (fundamentalist Christian parents). He only stopped denying it to himself two weeks ago, so I have to applaud you for your confidence and self-respect. Be careful and good luck!

24 -- came out to my parents almost a year later.

Well when you come out --be gentle and loving to yourself -- some people will accept it and some may even say "what took you so long? We knew it all the time."

Peace and Blessings,
