When my daughter was in thee 4th grade, she made a compost box. Don't laugh... she won! My husband built her a box (about 2' x 1' x 1') out of wood and some old window screens. We started it off by purchasing some store bought compost and then added our own fruit and vegetable peelings to it over the course of about 8 weeks. She took notes every few days to see how long it took for the peelings to break down. She also did a lot of research at the library regarding all the different organism needed to produce good compost and drew pictures of the organisms. We covered her board with some wall paper that looked like a life size picket fence with flowers and grass. On the board she included all of her findings and drawings. She proudly place her little compost box in front of the board and I have to tell you, it looked adorable!!! It was very unusual and the judges said they liked that it was obvious that she had done the work herself!
