www.hud.gov is the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. It's website is geared towards the first time homebuyer. They will walk you through the legal process and ensure you know it all before homebuying. They will also send you free pamphlets and other literature as requested. I think it's the best place to start as they are non-biased and not trying to sell you anything. Good luck!

About 10 years ago I bought a book by Ilyce Glink called 100 Questions Every First-Time Home Buyer Should Ask. She's a syndicated columnist and radio/TV commentator. She has a website with an archive of past articles, many of which address things you should consider as a first time home buyer. Good luck!

Try www.fairwaymac.org. Read some of the stories, then give 'em a call. The service is free, and the knowledge possessed by the owner of the company is quite extensive. She can tell you whether your financial situation is good for getting a mortgage, and give you some ideas of what to avoid when purchasing.

I don't know but be sure you find out about the program for first time home owners. It pays your downpayment if you stay in the house for five years. Any real estate salesperson should know about it.
