need help w/ algebra hw (involved application solving)?

Question

theres this one problem i dont understand, here it is:

"a man has 150 feet of fencing to build the pen shown in the illustration. if one end is a square, find the outside dimensions."

since i couldnt type out the illustration i drew it out on paint:

You have 4 sides in the square of length x, and 4 sides of the rectangle, 2 with length x, and 2 with length x+5. One of the x sides is shared by the two shapes.

Thus your equation is this:

x +x +x +x +x +x +x +5 +5 =150
7x=140
x=20

Therefore your outside dimension are:
x by x +x +5

Or 20 by 45
