Actually dogs are litter trainable (it's pretty much what you're doing when you take them out- teaching them to go in a specific spot). It's just that cats bury their poop while most dogs don't, so using a litter box comes more naturally to cats.

Actually, dogs are litter trainable, but they don't bury it like cats do. The burying thing is an instinct in cats that dogs don't have. I know of many toy breed dogs that use a litter box. But it's a little impractical to litter train a Rottweiler.

I'm not sure that dogs aren't litter trainable. I have had more than one friend who trained their dog to use the litter box. I am in Canada and the winters are not always condusive to walking. I suspect that dogs require more exercise than cats so the idea of walking a dog surfaced in order for them to walk off their energy and just became part of the routine of having a dog.

As far as dogs not covering up their droppings, that's not totally true either. Have you never seen a dog "wipe it's feet" after defecating? They are making an attempt, however feeble, to cover it. They miss the mark badly, but at least they're trying! With a litter box, they'd do the same thing, and in short order the entire room would be the litter box -especially if it's a big dog!

you can litter box train your dog it is the same as if you were to train him to go outside it takes time persistence ans patients. My dog is train to go on potty pads or even bed liners for people that have accidents. but If I take him for a walk he will also go outside. What you have to do is train the dog the same way that you would train him o go outside. It is possible though. the one thing that you have to do is make sure that you keep the litter box or pee pads clean after every use give the dog a treat and clean up the waste. Dogs are smart I don't care what th other remarks say but it just take a little time. : ) I hope that this answers your question.

I'm pretty sure you could train a dog to use a litter box.. but only if it's a small dog. All you have to do is show it to use the box. I don't know anyone that would WANT their dog to use a litter box. Their crap would stink up the house and you would have to scoop it way too much. LOL

Cats have an instinct to dig and bury their poop and pee. Since the litter box is the only place in the house they can do this, they will use it. (Sometimes they will use a potted plant; bad for the plant.)
Dogs don't have this instinct.
Dogs can be taught to use a litter box, but it is harder. My small dog was litter box trained until I got a cat and she took over the litter box. I couldn't keep her from using it, and they weren't willing to share.

Cats stink. Seriously, I cannot stand cat litter trays.
My friends have a cat and I have to hold my breath as I walk past their laundry where the litter tray is, such is the stench.
At least dogs do their business outside.

it not really the case . if you had a huge house and were willing to make say a 20 by 20 foot area in the basement filled with sand or something you could teach a dog to go there but that is a huge area and it would be very strange .
dogs really need to go outside for the walk as well . cats i think should go outside too but that's for another day

Small dogs are litter trainable. They don't recommend it for big songs cuz their waste is bigger and it would be more of a hassle.
