Also, as a veteran I can tell you that while in the Navy I was always threatened with the spectre of never getting a good job if I did something wrong while serving, and yet no company that I have ever worked for has cared about my military record -- maybe if I had become a cop or joined the FBI, but regular people just don't really care about anything but your skills and what you can bring to the job.

Hello =)

Well,....That's not entirely true....

I think that virtually all employers would choose a veteran if all other factors were equal. It is usually used as a "tie-breaker" if all other factors are equal, in fact.

And, of course, you have a decisive advantage in all civil service positions, by getting extra points added to your scores.

But I will tell you that, as a past employer, I did not discriminate against those who were "dishonorably discharged", because, of course, I know that the service is not for everyone.

In short, however, why should you be chosen over more qualified individuals, just because of your service?? If you are equally matched, then, yes, by all means, but if you are an inferior choice, then you should be passed over, truly.

Namaste,

--Tom

In 20 years, I've been asked to produce my DD214 to about 4 prospective employers.

They either held some type of Defense contract or were near a base or fort, but that's it.

In our parents day being a Vet was a great ticket, but since Nam,... well you get the idea.

Hey, Thanks for Serving the Best Damn Country on the face of G-ds green and blue planet.

Go Navy.

the "company" may not have any policies regarding hiring ex-military but the hiring manager might.

when I ever had to pick out of a evenly skilled group of job applicants I would always chose the person or persons that were ex-military.

I'm a vet so I always extend that courtesy to others that have served...

I not sure, I think my company cares; I'm self-employed. Ha!
I really not care what people think of my Military Service. I got 4 years of college paid for and some college courses while I was in the Air Force.

I'm an Army veteran, and I really think it depends on who the employer is. The state governments, and feds do care. What state are you in?? Peace and good luck. Thank a Vet if you are reading this in English!!!

It depends on where you apply and your attitude. Where I work, it is certainly a plus on your application. Folks have a better chance if they have a military background.
