I'm a new mom and I bottlefeed but I wanted to try breastfeeding as well. It's been a few weeks since my delivery but i think all my milk is gone. So, if you don't use your milk right away does it just dry up or something. Because now i think i have no milk anymorei try to get some out but nothing comes out?

Call a lactation consultant. If you call the hospital/birthing center or the health department they can put you in touch with one. You can re-lactate but it will take persistance and effort.

Yes, your milk does "dry up" when it isn't expressed.

You can try re-lactation and some moms have had success with that. I would contact La Leche League and see if they can help you.

I think what will most likely happen is that you will be able to produce some milk, but will also need to suppliment with formula.

Usually your milk dries up within a few weeks but it's not impossible to re-lactate. The longer you wait though, the less likely you will have success.

Your milk supply may not be enough to breastfeed exclusively, but your milk probably hasn't dried up, it usually takes a long time for that. However you will need to stimulate you breast milk, perhaps by pumping, to work on building your milk supply up. Just weigh your child then breastfeed and have her weighted immediately afterward that will tell you how much milk the baby is receiving.

You need to speak to a lactation consultant. I've known moms who adopted and with the use of medicine and pumping can now breastfeed.... i'm sure if you've been pregnant recently they could bring it back a lot easier. Remember though, what you "try to get out" will never been what the baby can get out. Have him feed from the breast before each meal and finish up with a pump and you should be able to build your supply back up... but yea, speak to a lactation consultant she'll know better.

You can try to suckle the child and be patient, most likely the milk will come back. Speak to your doctor for advice on how to start the milk, sometimes they can give you some hormones that help.

There's still a chance that you're milk can come back, but it will be slow, you need to take your time and pump it first, then you'll know how much you're producing and feed bottle in between.
