For the last 2 nights, every time i start to doze off, I will have a panic attack, where It feels like someone is pinching the middle of my chest and I jerk awake. I don't even open my eyes or gasp for air so it's not sleep apnea causing it per se. This happens repeatedly over and over, and I am not gaining any sleep. I have short mini dreams right before the attacks and almost think I will doze off, then bam, I jerk awake with a panic attack feeling in my chest. I took blood pressure and pulse immediately after. Pulse was a little high, blood pressure was normal.
This usually happens when I'm overtired, or extremely worried/worked up over personal or life problems. I even tried taking a whole 10mg ambien, and although mellowing and spacing me out nicely, It didn't get me any sleep. Do I need an anxiety drug? Any over the counter stuff that might work as well as ambien but for anxiety/panic?
This is really freaking me out, and making it even harder to calm down enough to sleep.

Laura J, I am on the ambien (Xolnox generic) right now. I normally only take about 1/4 of a 10mg pill every night or every other night. but tonight i took an entire pill expecting it to work. All it did was left me dizzy and heavyheaded for a few hours. It did sort of change the attack from a tension headache type sensation rolling over the back of my head to the panic attack. I guess ambien doesen't work as well for specific panic attacks as i thought. It has helped me calm down many times, and sleep with milder grades of panic attacks, but not this full blown one. Oddly I feel no panic, just general anxiety when laying down, yet that turns into panic attacks upon sleep.

Chula, if i cant sleep tonight i'll grab some from walmart. Thanks for the suggestion! I've tried alternatives like valerian, and combos containing valerian and hops, etc.... They didnt do a single thing for me. Do you personally have panic attacks that the tea has helped?

I finally slept for about 11 hours after having to see a doc. She gave me Ativan (since xanax didnt work a few years ago when i tried it). It calmed me down enough to sleep, but I still have nearly constant anxiety, and a lump in my throat feeling even when awake. I may have to end up going on depression meds.

Side affects from taking sleeping pills in the recent past.

Have you been taking them?

Don't do it again and allow the withdrawals to pass.

Know something ''natural'' that might calm your nerves. It will put you right to sleep! You'll feel relaxed and refreshed in the morn.
Try: Celestial Seasonings 100% Natural Herb Tea-it is caffeine free. The box says ''sleepytime'' (a green box with a picture of a bear sitting in a chair). It's good stuff, does the job every time!
Sounds like the ambien is making you wired instead of calming your nerves. Try this first and think lovely thoughts. You'll be okay.
''Nitey-nite'' Zzzzzzzzz.....

I have the same episodes when I'm extremely tired. They used to freak me out but over time the after-fear became more of a pain in the butt than anything so I just decided it couldn't kill me so I just started ignoring it and going back to sleep.
I still will wake up like that, but within minutes I'm back asleep. Turned out I was more afraid of the feelings of what happened rather than what actually happened.
I do take cymbalta by the way. Works well with anxiety but not as good as Paxil.
