Truck drivers generally get paid comission, based on how far they travel. Usually something like 40 cents a mile. So if you go a thousand miles, you make 400 dollars.
You can't just wake up one day and be a truck driver. You have to be properly trained, as you get a special license from the DMV.
And in most cases, you have to pay for your license yourself. Most companies hire you to drive for them, then they contract you out to drive for clients.

Schneider (for instance) will train but you will have to pay your dues (i.e. earn a bit less) bc you are learning and refining the skills you need. With more experience you can earn a lot more.

Some start at 35k or so and others can make 100k a year. If you own your own rig you can crank the bucks but also it's expensive to buy one, insure it and maintain it. It just depends on your experience and driving record/skills. Good truck drivers are always in demand. It can be a lonely life if you are over the road, but if you want to spend a lot of time doing your own thing, then go for it. You also must be patient and skillful with the nuts out there on the highways. Maybe try a smaller truck (straight truck first) like Frito Lay or something.
