Someone told me that she is depressed of her divorce and therefore she doesn't eat as much (she looks just horrible!). I don't understand how food is related to her pain after divorce? Most stories I heard was young girls starve themselves to look like skinny models, but they are young and don't know better. She is older than I, educated, member of some professional club, and definitely earn good money. Can the divorce really be the reason or is she lying?

When I'm depressed and stressed out, I don't eat. Not that I consciously decide I'm not going to eat or anything, it just doesn't cross my mind and I don't feel hungry. Today I didn't eat anything until like half an hour ago my husand made me a sandwich and told me he wasn't going to bed until I ate it. It's possible it's just stress. Maybe offer to take her for a "girls night out" and go to one of you guys' favorite restaurants and buy her dinner? If she's having fun, chances are she'll realize she's hungry..

Believe it. I have the same problem. When I'm unhappy, I cannot eat, my appetite just disappears. Years ago, when I was very distraught from a break-up, I lost so much weight from eating next to nothing for weeks, that I weighed in at 105 LB and looked awful. (I'm 5'9") I didn't do it for attention, I couldn't help it. The thought of eating was repulsive even though I had chronic bad breath and felt horrible. Anorexia can be a result of feeling helpless, eating being one of the few things that can be controlled. I remember forcing myself to eat a couple of crackers, it sounds ridiculous but it's true. Luckily, I 'm very happy now. Encourage her to take better care of herself.

sometimes people loose their appetite due to stress and/or depression--a divorce would likely cause those. Eating disorders come from low self esteem, distorted body image, and the fact that a person can control that aspect of themselves.

Ouch! l'm like that too. l'm not in the mood to eat when l'm depressed. You don't do it on purpose, just a feeling of numbness settles in and you seem oblivious to the fact that you need to eat.
What a depressed person needs is understanding and acceptance. Try not to "preach" as they hate it.
Focusing on their positive traits will help.

Depends on the person actually.....some people eat food when they are down in the dumps while some others have no appetite at all.

It's about control a lot of times....her eating habits are about the only thing she has control over it seems.

For most people it's the control they feel. They can control everything they put (or don't put) into their mouths.
