All my life, I have been home-schooled. Next year I am starting high school in a public school in Maine. I have heard stuff that it is really bad and stuff. I just want to survive. My older brother even said it is horrible. What can I do?

More detail: I had a friend that said I am too nice and public school will destroy me. She says I have to be mean or I will get beat up. Is that true?

What area of Maine do you live in? I live in Cape Elizabeth, right outside of Portland. Most of Maine's public schools are pretty good, but I hated Cape Elizabeth (the kids are really mean) so I go to McAuley (an all-girl catholic high school in Portland) where I am a junior and I LOVE IT!! I'd say you'll probably be fine. There are always people who will want to befriend you (yes, even at Cape Elizabeth. haha.)
You should come for an ice cream sometime and say hello! I work at Cold Stone Creamery in the Old Port. =]

Dear, it is not horrible, if it would be, people would not go to school anymore. Don't worry, just be yourself, have fun there, make friends and if you have any worries, ask us questions :) I love going to school, to classes, conferences, anything this type. Of course everywhere there are different personalities, you can not get along with everybody and you don't have to. So, just enjoy every new experience.

Seek out the "good" kids in things like honor society (if you qualify), yearbook, newspaper, student government, other clubs of interest.
If they don't exist, go to class and go home. Socialize with people from out of the school (like your social activities when home schooled)

It will be fine, a new adventure for you. Just be friendly and have fun with it. You will be meeting so many new people and sharing wonderful experiences. Have a good attitude and things will be well for you.
