Take a look at the second chapter of Sarah Vowell's "Assassination Vacation". It's all about the Garfield Assassination, and gives an explanation of Garfield, his nomination, Chester A. Arthur (his successor), the 1880 Republican Convention, and Garfield's assassin as well. Interesting stuff about why Garfield was nominated and the logic behind it.
