The polar star define the North

the altitude of the polar star is equal to your latitude north. so say if coasta rica is 10 degrees north (i am just guessing) then the polar star would be 10 degrees from the horizon due north. this doesn't work in the souther hemisphere, in the southern hemisphere they use the southern cross for navigation which i know nothing about.

Find Ursa Major (The Big Dipper aka The Plough).
The two stars not on the handle side point up to the north star (Polaris).
it is about five times the apparent angular distance between these two stars, above the Big Dipper.
