Aren't all inventions basically luxuries? Air, food, water, shelter: none were inventions. People managed to live fulfilling lives without telephones, electricity, television, ipods. Life centered around family. And sad to say, many of our "inventions," have done nothing really to enhance life, but have detracted from it. People live longer, but where? In nursing homes far away from family, generally. Depression is commonplace. Cancer, instead of being a rarity, is commonplace, etc.

Electricity. Cars. TV. Computers. Telephones. Anything really. Well technically we could "survive" without them but we get so used to having them that we can't imagine a simple life without them. Sometimes though I think all these things that are supposed to make life better or easier just complicate it. We get further away from nature & the things that matter. We get too caught up in these "modern things." The things you own, own you. You have to work harder to earn money to buy all the latest gadgets to keep up with the Jones'. Technology has a price. Most people are heavily in debt paying for it all. They pay spiritually too. People are more stressed & depressed than ever. But hey, I wouldn't want to give up my modern conveniences either! I love nature but not to sleep in! I don't do camping. I could not live (comfortably) without electricity & plumbing!

There is nothing that has been invented that we cannot live without. Because, for something to be invented we've had to not have had it before.
People sure would piss and moan though if the car was taken away....to answer your question.

A microscope. Without it, scientists and doctors would not be able to detect viruses and find a cure for them.

Materialistically?? Plumbing...Just think about all we would have to do without plumbing....Fetch water every day--from some source with no pipes distributing it anywhere......Burnin our own fecies to get rid of it so it doesnt make its way back to our water to kill us that way...hmm..what else...Well those are my main issues with no plumbing..Where would I bathe though? hmmm
