When I was I child, I was too terrified to do anything wrong. If my brothers where bad they were whipped with a belt on their bare behinds until they stopped screaming, or until my stepfather decided he was done. All of us were ridiculed, told we were worthless, pushed around, degraded. It wasnt' unusual for any of us to get a smack to the head.
Now I am older and eventually will have children of my own. I work with children, and refuse to use any form of physical punishment. I do not talk down to children, or treat them like less of a person just because they are a child.
I find children respond better when you talk to them, find out the root of their problem, and treat them intelligently. If you guide them to make decisions because they want to, rather than because they are afraid not to, they will flourish. All of the children ever in my care respect me, even ones that were violent at first. Any person who hits a child only shows that they have little (if any) self control. Hitting someone who can't defend themselves? Sounds like the schoolyard bully, merely physically grown.

Spankings, and belt whippings, but over my jeans, not the back.
I was probably spanked every day for one thing or another from age three to five. But corporal punishment was no longer done after that, as I recall.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I wish people were never harmed so brutally by the very parents who are supposed to love and protect them. Don't get me wrong. I support spankings. A reasonable smack on the fanny has it's benefits when warranted and administered with love. But beating a child is disgusting. And here I was thinking what a mean mom I am. I make my children write long essays about the changes they need to make in their behavior and why.

I didn't get in trouble very often, but when I did I usually got grounded or got things taken away from me. Only when I was small did I get spanked, and then it was for serious offenses and only with open hands. I know lots of people our age that got punished the way you describe, though.

Whipped with a belt....soap stuffed in my mouth....and teased.

It seems a lot of people get the belt.

Spanked when I was very young, then, when I grew older, I was given a tractor's loader bucket, and told to fill it with rocks from the field. It took most of a day to do.

Got spanked dude, sucked, but I think I turned out better because of it, been slapped a few times too, got smacked once, trust me, there is a difference. But I definitely don't think of it as child abuse, I will most likely spank my children, supernanny would not like me, haha.

Beat with wood spoon and hands. Humiliated and degraded. Its amazing that I grew up with any self esteem at all.
In fact - I am very confident and assured.
One thing they taught me - how not to raise my kids.

Spankings and being barred from the tv.

I stopped being so bad because I was sick of missing "Hey Arnold" so much.
