There are a few possibilities.
1. They are ignoring because they feel that it is a waste of time and money.
2. They're in fact researching but they want to keep it a secret because other countries would think that their military capabilities are limited or they just want to keep things for themselves.
3. Avoid public fear
4. US spy planes
5. Top secret developed planes or weapons.
There are lot's of reasons but at the end of the day, you won't get to know the real answer

Some governments feel that their job is to protect the citizens from all manner of danger and fear. Since they can't explain the sightings they deny their existence.
Recently some governments have released all their research in UFOs. So, things are changing.

I think that UFOs are actually experimental craft built by the government. If they have an anti-gravity drive or some other low energy propulsion system it would be disruptive to the oil and car industries and would be hidden from the public. I saw one exactly like the one seen over O'Hare Airport recently so I know there is something to them. Thanks to the impeding speed of light its ultra unlikely UFOs come from anywhere but some secret government facility.

For the same reason they ignore ghost sightings. The have better things to spend time and money on. Like medicare and the army for example.

NASA and the government receive more than 100s of reports of UFOs there of is a lot of reason for ignoring things the NASA had exprience alot of reports of UFO so thats why they ignoring(they think they are smart about UFO). that is one and there other is that they are too buzy (common sence). the lasy reason is that you might not have proof that is why without proof you cant say it is atheoy.

Because Unidintified Flying Objects are typically Top Secret or unmanned spy planes. You wouldn't want to freak people by telling them your making a Robotic Stealth Bomber!!! Because then people would run around like a chicken with it's head cut off!!!!

The most likely reason is because people would panic if the goverment said they were aliens; let's face it they aren't portrayed nicely in movies. Some people may get the brilliant idea of going to war with them and we would be wiped out by their superior weapontry.

If you believe we are the only intelligent life in the universe you are truly ignorant and close minded. The fact that the Govt will not give society the credit of being mentally sound enough to handle that knowledge is scary they are basically saying we know what's best for you , you have no say so. I know first hand that the Govt are deeply involved in a relationship with extra terrestrial beings where we trade "subjects" for study to them for technology. The reason why they will not tell us that this goes on is because of religious implications most people are so primitive they could not handle the fact that their God doesn't exist and organized religion is in place to give people a false sense of security and purpose to keep us sedated and ignorant.

UFO in the sense of aliens, don t exist.
UFO in the literal sense, is because it shows military weakness to the other countries.
