for non metals, use the ending -ide
like Br- is Bromide

for transition metals, it is common to put the charge in roman numerals now
like Cu+1/Cu+2 is Copper (I)/Copper (II)

but it used to be that you had to use the latin names with -ic being the higher charge and -ous being the lower charge
like Cu+1/Cu+2 is cuprous/cupric

The Alkali/Alkaline metals on the far left of the periodic table don't have special names. Na+ is just called a sodium ion.
