I am 30 weeks pregnant and have been fighting a severe cold for about a week now. I have a list of meds that my OB gave me that I can use sparingly, but the cough syrup just seems to be making me worse. So I went to St. Johns Express Care, per my OBs order, and she prescribed to me some Amoxil. But she told me to check with my OB about Claritin or Mucinex to dry up the runny nose and watery eyes, it says nothing about either of those meds on my list, so my question does anyone out there know of anything I can safely take over the counter to dry it up fast? It is driving me nuts, my poor nose is raw and both of my eyes are getting that way too from me wiping the tears away constantly. Please help if you can, anything would be greatly appreciated!!

I'm 29 weeks and also have a horrible cold! I've been using a saline nose wash and vicks inhaler to help my runny nose and so I can breathe. And I've taken tylenol for the body/head aches. I've also been drinking hot tea that isn't too strong. I prop pillows up to sleep at night. My doctor said it should go away in a week. I don't want to take anything else because it could pass to the baby and most cold medicine makes you drowsy.

My OB prescribed me Claritin (back before it was over the counter). It was 10 MG tablets. So... I know that is safe. Call the on call. They can tell you and they will. Good luck

Don't take any over the counter meds before consulting your doctor. A quick call could make all the difference and alot of times the receptionist or the nurses can give you that information, too!

I don't know about Mucinex, it's not in Hale's "Medications and Mother's Milk" or "Mosby's Drug Guide for Nurses" but regular Claritin is fine and Claritin D is fine. Good luck and I hope you feel better!

The best way to naturally clear up a cold is to stop eating mucus producing food, and cough that stuff up. Mucus producing foods are cows milk, cheese, white breads. Do not suppress the cough it will only prolong your cold.
Drink lots of lemonade and orange juice ( fresh squeezed is best).

when I was pregnant I got this terrible cold and I know exactly what are you feeling, what I did that really helped was this:
Take some warm water add salt (1tsp) stir and with towel put two drops of the solution to each nostril, or you can do the same with chamomile tea, depending on how raw is your nose.

i dont know how your situation with pregnancy is (if there are any problems or complications) but claritin IS on my list of OTC medicines that you can take, call your doc office and they will pull your chats and see if there are any problems with your pregnancy and tell you weather you can take it or not.
