Soft White MINI 60. Bulb blinks out and then emits smoke and strong smell of burning plastic. I have had two such failures in the past month in different lamps. Fortunately, I was present when the bulbs failed. Both were seldom used. These bulbs are rated at 8,000 hours. Anyone else experience this type of failure?

I have spoken with a Sylvania engineer by telephone. He says the 40 watt and higher bulbs are designed to be installed BASE DOWN. My bulbs that failed were in a horizontal orientation. He says the latest packaging tells the consumer to use the bulb in fixtures that orient the bulb base down. They still offered to replace my bulbs with new ones even though the failure was related to my improper use. Very nice and a class act from Sylvania. The other CF bulbs I have from Sylvania have performed flawlessly and economically.

I just had one fail about 30 minutes ago. Had it less than a year. Smelled up the whole upstairs bathroom. I was racing all over the house trying to figure out what was on fire and then I looked up and saw a burnt out light bulb. I didn't see any smoke but the burnt plastic smell was/is awful. I was searching the internet for answers and and thats how I found this post. The bulb was installed vertically upside down (part that screws in facing up). I actually have about 30 of these light bulbs and haven't had any problems with them burning out and smelling up the place. Although a couple others burnt out in less than a year with minimal use

I in basic terms handle the low skill bulbs interior the way I did with the previous form. turn them on and rancid as required. I quite have used them for kind of 9 years now and not in any respect heard that they must be left on. actually the preliminary bulbs got here as a 'freebie' from the appliance employer EON with classes for use, no point out being made as to leaving them on. My in basic terms gripe is that it may take a at the same time as earlier they attain finished brightness. I turn on my outer porch gentle so as that i will placed rubbish in my wheelie bin, and locate that I quite have in many cases accomplished the job earlier the bulb has completed finished brightness, so I now use a flashlight. The plus edge of low skill bulbs is they final an prolonged time. As for the kettle I constantly have it some 0.33 finished.

Not personally, but are these lamps controlled by dimmers?
You aren't supposed to use CFL bulbs on circuits controlled by dimmers. I wonder if that is the reason why.
