Well first I would suggest getting your eyes checked. It may be your just not seeing it well. And of course you could get checked to see if you have some form of Attention Deficit Disorder.
But I wonder if it's not just the subject matter. I have no problem with books I enjoy, but school books require me to work at concentrating.

Ensure that you have a nutritious eating plan (or your brain can't function optimally), exercise regularly and get enough sleep. Try a speed reading course. Make quick notes as you read. After the lesson, rewrite a condensed version of what you have learnt; review these weekly, monthly and before exams. Do a memory improvement course. See your doctor and get tests done - there may be a medical explanation.

As a mother who raised 5 kids, I'd be willing to bet the odds are great that you're not getting anywhere near the sleep you need.
This alone can cause you to have great difficulty in concentrating.
You need no less than 8 hours sleep every night.
Do this, and I'd bet within a week you'll feel 100% better.

CONCENTRATION comes out of one’s own poise and calm mind.
In other words concentration is the by- product of peacefulness!
If your mind is not calm and already burdened with pre-occupied thoughts and with some of your present ‘under-stream interests’ you will not be in a position to concentrate on any of your studies.
IF YOUR CUP HAS TO BE FILLED IN, THE OLD ROTTON THINGS ALREADY FILLED THERE, IS TO BE SPILLED OUT!
So, do one thing now. Sit aside, and think about yourself that what is your goal in your life through the present education and evaluation.
And what are all the hurdles and distractions come while you are at classroom as well as while being alone at studies.
Never blame your mind that it is inferior to some one else!
YOU MIGHT BE SPOILING YOUR MIND AND
WASTING YOUR PRECIOUS TIME in
some other directions like watching TV, chitchatting with friends,
thinking about your friend of opposite sex, spending your time for others
in the name of goody-good ways etc..
YOU HAVE IMMENSE POTENTIALS LIKE BUDDHA AND BILLGATES. BUT, THE ONLY THING IS, YOU MIGHT BE WASTING IT IN WRONG WAYS AND EXPECTING THE GOOD RESULTS!
So, Make your mind calm like a still water in the pond;
Just watch your subjects being taught in the class-room;
Tell your mind not to wander here and there at studies;
Cut-out your Distractions with no questions;
Be focused in studies, for the sake of your own good-life!
THEN, DIFINITELY YOU ARE GOING TO BE THE WINNER SOON!
My blessings!

I have a neurological disability that has affected my concentration and my short-term memory. I've found writing important points down as I go along helps, both with concentrating and with remembering things.

Focus grasshopper...focus.
Go to the library, explain your problem to the librarian. Ask for some short stories with topics that interest you. If you challenge and exercise your brain, it will work more quickly and you will remember more. Do you like poetry? Find a poet you like and memorize some poems. All libraries have reading materials to help people who have reading problems.

Get yourself evaluated for ADD, the most common cause for such complaints. Psychiatrists are best trained to evaluate for it. If it turns out that you do have ADD, medication can help amazingly well.
In the meantime, highlighting, taking notes, reflecting on each sentence, and weaving it into what you already know may help with keeping you focused.

Try this: Eat a good meal. Toss away cares and worry at least during the time you are reading.

ADD. I suffered from it and still do. Talk to your doctor and don't be too afraid to try any medicines they may offer to you. It's amazing how good they improve your ability to concentrate.
