There are several possibilities: Venus is low in the southwestern sky just after sunset, and because of the refractive effects of the atmosphere could appear red and flashy, Betelgeuse (already mentioned) is a possibility, as well, and would be in the southeast about sunset. Arcturus is in the west-northwest and has a red tinge, as well.

Could be Betelgeuse. It is a bright red star in Orion and could be twinkling.
