Dawn has a fairly good description. All of the answers ignore the ecosystem surrounding whatever species you care to think about or study.

The whole ecosystem changes - ice ages, droughts, el nino, ...

Each species fits into a niche in the system. As the surrounding conditions change, some individuals thrive in new conditions, while others don't.

What Darwin called 'natural selection' describes better the process of picking the individuals who fit the new niche best.

Many people have twisted this theory to a much simpler phrase 'survival of the fittest', and believe that fittest means strongest - instead of best fitted for the new niche.

Hello Myrah,
Survival of the fittest is the natural emergence of talent, intelligence, athleticism, sexual attractiveness and intuitive instinct, either manifested separately or in conjunction, all combining to raise the chances that an individual will survive AND produce offspring. The offspring may inherit these traits from their parents, thus passing on their "survival" genes. Incidentally, one does not necessarily need to believe in "evolution" to observe that survival of the fittest occurs on a regular basis. Plants that have thorns or that have bitter tastes do not get eaten as much as unprotected plants. They live to reproduce.
Someone who is mean may have an advantage in a struggle for power and survival, unless his/her mean-ness gets him in trouble with the group at large, which is just what happened in Iraq recently with Saddam Hussein. (Note the importance that was placed on eradicating Saddam's offspring, who shared some of his sadistic tendencies.) Fortunately, even if a person lacks physical skill or beauty, one can go very far in "surviving" if they just use their intelligence.

Darwin preferred his own " Natural Selection " to Spencer's " Survival of the Fittest ". The process by which individual organisms with favorable traits survive long enough to reproduce. Shorthand; The differential survival of replicators.

Survival of the fittest is the theory that the animal who lives long enough to reproduce will be the one who passes along his genes to the next generation. If you are too weak to live to reproduce then your weak genes will end with you when you die.

There are 4 wolves starving and only 3 rabbits hoppin' along. The three fittest wolves will be fast enough to catch rabbits, eat & survive & reproduce, and the weakest/slowest will starve out and die, and his genes will not be reproduced, so only the "strongest genes" will be maintained.
