they did smell it. they didn't go in voluntarily. . . they were forced. people who tried escaping were shot dead on the spot.
The type of gas used in the Holocaust was usually hydrogen cyanide in a form called Zyklon B, but sometimes carbon monoxide (as internal combustion engine exhaust gas).

Various gases were used. Mustard gas was not uncommon. We learned a lot about the human bodies reactions to various poisons and nerve agents due to the Nazi's good records. I suggest that you don't study this in too great a detail. Wait until you are older. You won't like what you see and learn. Keep it simple for now. It is bad that people suffered and died. It is good that the data was recorded that people can be saved today. It is a sharp two edged sword. The same thing that kills will also provide healing. All tragedy can provide knowledge for the future. It is our responsibility to learn and apply that knowledge with wisdom and compassion.

They were locked in at that point. What would they have done? The people in the camps were lied to repeatedly, told they were just showers, to get clean. And after all, it's not like they had a choice, if you had ten men pointing machine guns at YOU...what would you do?
