It just means "The Long Cycle" is coming to a close, on Dec. 21st, 2012 and they didn't BOTHER to calculate a new calendar! That's it. Doesn't mean anything else. No end of world, nothing. Sorry.
Do a search on Yahoo! for "Mayan Calendar, 2012" The calculations were for 5,000 years or more, so the mathmatics of it were extensive. To do it for another 5,000 years would have require TREMENDOUS EFFORT and they just did not do it. No big mystery, no "drama," no shivering end of the world. Just farmers being realistic about calculating 10,000 years ahead of time, and realizing for them, it would be pretty much, well silly.

I have answered this question about a hundred times.
The Maya had several different interlocking calendars. The Long Count Calendar, which is simply a count of days going back to 3113 BCE, is the one everyone's talking about. It's like an odometer except most of the wheels go up to 0-19 instead of 0-9 (one goes 0-17). One of the positions, the Baktuns, is currently at 12. (A Baktun is 396 of our years long.) On 12-21-2012, it goes to 13.
But some people, for some stupid reason, think it will go back to 0 (even though it can go up to 19!) and the calendar ends, the world ends, etc. It doesn't; it won't.

a friend a mine swears by the Mayan calendar - keeps reminding me that the world will come to an end in 2012 . I kept telling him to start spending all his $$ (he's quite wealthy) within the next 6 years, he just brushes me off and thinks I'm making fun of him. I personally don't believe in folklore cuz my mom taught us a lot of this when we were younger - so far, nothing's been proven, yet !

this is the date when our time is up in this cycle. not really the end of our world but the beginning of a new cycle you could probably talk with a native American holy man/medicine man if you are near one of our reservations then too all you have to do is pay attn. to the signs our mother earth is revealing. yep tis the end for most if not all of us or begining however you choose to veiw it.

It is just more doomsday rubbish based on ancient superstition. It's the new Nostradamus. I would ignore it.
