Its a play with in a play. The theatre I worked at this summer put on a production and I saw it like 10 times. The idea is in the 1940's (or so) there is a company putting on a production of "The Taming of the Shrew" The stars are a divorced actor and actress (Fred and Lilli) and they are playing Petruchio and Katharina. So there is a bit of tension on the set. Fred is into the actress playing Bianca (lois) and tries to send her flowers (flowers that happened to be Lillis favorite) but they accidently end up with Lilli and she thinks Fred loves her again and is happy with him again. Well he tries to play it off like he meant to send them to her, and gets caught later and a war between the two starts. Well it gets so bad that they start fighting on stage in the middle of the performances and it appears that the audience thinks its part of the play, but they may not. Whatever the case, Lilli threatens to walk off.
Then a pair of gangsters show up (Fred owes their boss money, because Lois's other boyfriend Bill signed Fred's name on an gambeling IOU). Fred is unable to convince them that it was not him, so what he does is tell them that it was him, but Lilli is threatnign to leave the show and the show is how he is going to get them money, so they force Lilli to stay (by comically becoming actors in the play). In the end Lilli calls her boyfriend (a super lame war general) and he comes to get her (but kind of does not believe her as to what is going on), she "leaves" with him, but then later comes back to be with Fred, as they both realize they love one another and presumibly live happily ever after.

Kiss me Kate is about an egotistical performer named Fred Graham. He is reunited with his ex-wife Lilli Vanessi in the leading roles of Petruchio and Kate in Shakespears 'Taming of the Shrew'. Throughout the show they fight and obviously still love each other. Meanwhile, due to mistaken identity, two gangsters harass Fred. Also, two former cabaret performers cast in Taming of the Shrew, Lois Lane and Bill Calhoun struggle to keep their romance alive.
It follows their onstage and offstage lives.

Kiss Me Kate is based on Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew. A struggling theater company puts on a musical version of Taming of the Shrew, which is about a girl named Kate who is very unobediant towards men so she cannot get a wife while Kate's siter, Bianca, is very beautiful and has many suitors. However, Their father refuses to marry Bianca until he marries Kate.

It's a modern adaptation of shakespeare's "taming of the shrew." Maybe get some cliff notes or something of that and it could help.

It's based on the Shakespearean Play: Taming of the Shrew
You could read that if you'd rather.
Watch it first and will help you, if you'd like. I've seen it a gazillion times, on stage and the movie version.
