Okay, so I think my fan must be broken (it is louder than normal).. but I am not able to bring it in for 3 weeks, as I need it for school work. What can I do to help keep the temperature down? It overheats enough that it turns itself off. Oh yeah it is a laptop...Any ideas would be great!!!

Thanks for the advice. Yes, the computer is getting so warm that it turns its self off. I know this is the case, as it is very very hot. I'll try some of these suggestions.

Is that cooling pad for $30, is that made specifically for laptops?

If you have any others, please post them here :)

If you have canned air blow it out of the computer the computer may have a dirty fan, if you don't Know what you are doing try the following, raise the lap top up on a couple of books one on each side the get a fan and set it where it will blow on the fan opening of the computer than try again. If it turns off again do not start it up again unless you can find someone to pull it apart and clean the fan. But be careful your drive could be dieing

Is the laptop actually hot, or just noisy? Noisy can be a drive failing as well. Make sure you have your stuff backed up if you are not sure that it is a fan.

If it is hotter then normal then you can use an external fan to cool it until you can get it serviced. A small desk fan blowing in the cooling vents should help. The laptop "should" shut off before it gets to hot to damage it, but I would not bet my laptop on it.

If the fan is running full time that means some program is running without you knowing about it and is making the fan run ( I know this because my husband is a computer geek and he fixed this for me last nght) My Maxtor (back up) wouldn't turn off (and it wasn't running either)...somehow something in my computer was turning it on. So check to see whats running first and if that doesn't work, try a small external fan, pointed at the laptop. ( I keep one going on my tower even for everyday use, just to keep it cool and running well...)

Most likely it is NOT overheating, but if you think it is, they have dual fans that you stick under your laptop that blows air into it. I however do not think it is that. You might have some software issues which conflict with each other. when they meet (run at the same time) they make the computer go haywire and shut off...

I hope you find out what is wrong with your computer
good luck

Be sure to keep it off soft materials (ie: beds, clothes..).
If you're determined your fan is broken, then it wouldn't be making any noise at all, lol.

You can buy a sort of tray to put your laptop on and it plugs into the USB and acts like your fan (but more powerful)..you should be able to get them from most good PC warehouses.

Easy, go to staples and buy a cooling pad. They are about $30, it sits undernieth your laptop and it's a scilent fan that keeps the laptop nice and cool. And if you get a good enough qulity one that keeps your laptop really cool, then your laptops fan wont even turn on, so you wont have to hear it.

If your computer is a dell they have a problem with overheating. If not, the only thing I know to do is not to lay it down on a bed or in the carpet. Keep it on a surface where the fans can run and the air circulates.

Take two boxes and put them next to each other with a little space in-between. Put your laptop on top of it and it should cool it down a little. Also, run a fan on any openings.

If You are sure - shut it down - overheating can break it.

Else make sure that the air intakes at the bottom are free -
put a little stone or anything underneeth to make sure.

Never place it on soft surface so that it sinks in (e.g. on bed) and intakes are coverd.
