How should I answer this question?

I am coaching a junior high basketball team right now. We havent been doing very well. The kids came up to me and asked why they couldnt play just like they do when I let them play for fun during PE. They dont run plays during PE. They just want to do that and not work from a set offense. They think they can play better doing that then setting up an offense. What should I tell them about having a set offense and not just running around?

just let them have fun. they probably don't like the plays and all that because it limits them and it doesn't allow them to be creative. let them play like they play in gym for a game. it could go well because they may enjoy it more and play harder, or they will play better together like this. it can't hurt to try, especially sense you aren't doing so hot in the first place

My old coach used to say basketball is "organized chaos". Chaos in itself is leaderless, goal-less, role-less and pointless. For any TEAM to achieve a goal it must be accomplished as a unit within some type of framework. The fingers are frail and easy to break, but as a fist they can break through concrete. An offense is a way of keeping everyone on the floor involved in achieving the team goal and defining roles for players. If everyone is on different pages, then a TEAM could easily defeat them.

Maybe run plays that encourage them to use creativity and react to what the defense is doing instead of just running to a spot and setting a screen.

let them play the way they want so to establish team chemistry then little by little start putting some plays for down the wire situations so they know what to do during crunch time.
