there are many reasons. Stress, weight gain, weight loss, just about any change can affect your period.
I doubt it would be cysts those are very very painful.

Most Dr's will tell you as long as your not going soaking a pad every 2 hours and your not bleeding for more then 3 weeks you should be OK. But if you have pain that is worse then your normal cramps, bleed though a pad with in 2 hours or less,or are bleeding longer then 3 weeks you need to see a Dr.

I have heavy periods, and my doctor recommended that I take Ibuprofen 800 mg, twice a day the week before my period starts. It reduced the heavy bleeding and clotting. Try it.
