I know this will be controversial, but I would keep it, and never mention it again. If the previous owner put it there, I would think they would have called you. If it was somebody before that, obviously they didn't need it very badly. I know you may feel guilty, but so what? How many people could actually misplace $4,000 ? If I were going to call anyone, it would be the police, to make sure it is legit, or whatever. They could look up the registration to see who owned it, any warrants on them and such.
I say go on vacation, or put it in a safety deposit box, until I was certain what to do.

Under the law, report the money found in the car to the local government and wait until someone claims it. Likewise, ask the previous owner about the said money. If there are no takers, you can claim it as your own as finder's keeper.

Chances are if there is that kind of money in the vehicle and the person you bought it from didn't remove it then the car was probably purchased from an auction and was more than likely a drug seizure. Keep the money it is in no way shape or form your fault the money was left there and technically it is yours now... Congrats, I'll bill you later...

Legally this is your $, you bought the car & all things inside it.

I might research the ownership of the car, if who you bought it from was the only owner then more than likely it is their $. But if the car has had more than 1 owner, who knows who's it is

I think the right thing to do is to return it to the owner cause you never know if they are looking for it right now. If they don't want it and give it to you thank them and make sure they mean that.

Who knows who left the money there? You have a good point in that regard. Do what your conscience tells you to do. Do not act rashly. Think it over. I would keep it because no one knows who left it there and it was in the car when you bought it.

Go straight down to the police station, report the find and get a receipt for the money. if the owner contacts you, let them know what you have done. if they are honest people they will go get it, if not, after a short wait, you will be the legal owner of the money.
That's the honest thing to do.. Good luck..

Personally, I would take it back to them. I would at least hold it for about a month or so. If it is there's, I am sure they will call(given they have your information, and for that amount, I am willing to bet they will track you down). If, by that time they haven't called, then it is up to you. Obviously this isn't a legal opinion, more of a moral one.

I would offer to return the money but not specify the amount. If they don't know the amount, it is likely not theirs anyway.
