Hi.

Tomorrow I have a pre-write for my History Midterm writing portion.

To be honest I havent always been all that good with History, so im hoping somebody here can help me out.

My teacher told us to find information on the following, and this is what he told me...

"Hamilton vs. Jefferson"

"For Hamilton, the federal govenment".

"For Jefferson, state rights".

It may not make that much sense, but if somebody could help me out with finding information on those 2 things it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hamilton was for a strong Federal government and a national bank. because he understood the need for a strong dollar, the need to pay off revolutionary war debts, and a strong economy.

Jefferson thought that the strength of the country was in its local farmers, local craftsmen, and local shopkeepers. He actually thought that the country would be better off it it concentrated on mining, lumbering, and harvesting, and shipping raw materials to Europe, where they could be made into manufactured goods and those sent back here. He distrusted establishment of factories here, run by big businessmen and employing masses of workers. That would degrade rthe workers as individual citizens.

Jefferson was big into local government(de-centralized federal power); Hamilton advocated for a strong central/federal government. Hamilton wanted the United States to become an outgoing, strong industrial-type economy. Jefferson wanted the United States to be a quite land unto itself type of economy with farmers and small land owners. Jefferson idealized the hard working little people and all its charm. Hamilton idealized the big boys, the elites. Hamilton was the architect of (not literally, just advocated for) our federal bank system..now it's the federal reserve you hear about all the time. Over time, Hamilton's vision for the United States pretty much won over Jefferson's.

Basically, Hamilton was a Federalist. He favored a powerful federal government. Jefferson was an agrarian anti-federalist. He favored a leaner federal government, leaving more discretion to the states.
