I just read a book I hated. I can't give it to a library because I don't approve of the content. I can't throw it into the recycle bin because that's too good for it, and it would probably ruin whatever substance of which it became a recycled component.
So I burned it. (The fire retardant properties of a good heavy book cover are remarkable, BTW...)
Is this forgivable?

Naw, naw: I respect the content of people. And I can respectfully disagree with most things.
I typically will pass my unwanted books to a library but this one was not only uncomfortable, it hurt (fictional) characters I love and was remorseless.
I didn't want it polluting my shelves: it could be a danger to my other books!

Should I shred, then soak in rubbing alcohol, THEN burn?

If you bought it and didn't like it...I think you are allowed to do whatever you want with it. I forgive you.
As for the fire-retardancy of the book cover, next time you should cut out some pages in the middle and put one of those propulsion fireworks in the middle so the fuse is sticking out and then duct-tape the outside of it. When it goes off, the propulsion will make the book fly up a bit and then it will burst...much more dramatic; I had a friend do it to a High School geography book (he bought it for $5 because they discontinued it- not owner by the school)

Was it the Bible or a History book? Probably not, hey? Yah, I'm all for burning stuff . Who cares, it's your book and it's not like you're firing up a bon fire in your backyard every night composed of books. Well, hopefully you're not.

if you got it legally and honestly, it's you're property. Therefore, you have the God-given freedom to choose what to do with your book... as long as you don't endanger or threaten anyone's (either yours or other people's) life with it or use it to injure anyone.
