At any age at all, it is appropriate for books to include people who happen to be homosexual, without making an issue of it. That is, k - 5 should be exposed to the fact that there are gays in the world. In fact, they may be gay, but you don't need to tell a kid that. They are just well-served to know that other people know that and aren't demonizing them.

Once a kid reaches puberty, books dealing with homosexuality as 'an issue' are appropriate, if there's actually literary or historical merit to the work. In sex ed classes, heterosexuality should not be assumed and homosexuality should be treated as the genetic trait it is. That is, info should be presented that gays, straights, and both need to know.

Since being gay in a homophobic home/community is the number one factor in teen suicide, it is absolutely critical that our children, 10 percent of whom are born gay, are never ever given the message that there is something, anything wrong with homosexuality and that there is nothing right about homophobia.

Religious prejudice has no place in the schools. Any person who wants to teach that god finds homosexuality an abomination should be required by law to mention that this particular god also considers eating shrimp an abomination, wearing wool and linen together an abomination, and lying an abomination. If they don't get it and still want to teach their myth system, then they must also teach that jesus said, 'all have sinned and come short of the glory of god' and 'why are you concerned with the splinter in your neighbors eye? tend to the log in your own."

That would depend upon the age of the children. There is a place where teaching about anything sexual is simply too young. The basics need to be know, but that's it. Once a certain level of maturity is achieved, then teaching more would be appropriate. That level is much debated. I also believe that parents are primarily responsible for such education. It is wrong to expect the public school system to teach children moral/ethical values. Plus, I don't trust just anyone to teach just anything to children.
