If so, is it ok to ask them to take it fromsomewhere other than inside my elbow? I have exzema really bad there. Last time I had blood taken the guy that did it was awful and I passed completely out. He literally jabeed me like 3 times and I got a huge bump afterwards that was all bruised up. I was ok with having blood taken but I hate it now! thanks

They will give you a pap test and take your history and of course your blood.
They took 4 vials of my blood.

Tell them to take your blood using that butterfly needle (it is meant for babies but that is what they use on me cause i have really small veins)

I have only had blood taken from my arm (where you are saying) and my finger. But once they took blood from my moms foot because they couldn't get it from her arm but that was because she was dehydrated.

Good luck and Congrats

I knw how you feel, i had to give blood when i was younger they pricked same arm three times, and finally drew blood a week later i found out i had to do it again because it got lost!!! Anyway on my first prenatal visit they made me pee in a cup, and yes they did take blood from me at the end of the visit to test for diabetes and other things like that that can pop up when you are pregnant. I am sure if you ask them they could take the blood elsewhere. Congratulations on the pregnancy and good luck

You'll get a papsmear and regular gyn exam. You'll also have to pee in a cup and have your urine tested for protein and hcg hormone. They will either take blood in the office or send you to the lab. Request that they take it from the back of your hand. Drink lots of water before you go - that will help when it comes time to draw the blood. Also, try to keep that area warm.

Unfortunately, you're in for quite a few blood test throughout your pregnancy - hcg levels, sugar levels, etc. Maybe put a band-aid over the inside of your elbow so they HAVE to find a different place.

Good luck and congrats!

i had a urine test, and they did an internal and a pap. i also had an internal ultrasound (really cool, doesn't hurt) and we heard the heartbeat that way - you can't hear the heartbeat from the outside yet, it's too early. we also sat down and went over everything - all my questions, my husbands, etc, decisions about testing (which you will have to make - it's testing done in the 11-13 weeks, and ultrasound that can tell you if you are high risk for down's, trisomy 13, etc) there is a lot of talking, we did get 2 pics of the ultrasound (looks like a little lima bean). it's exciting! enjoy it and i hope all goes well! best of luck!

Yeah, you're gonna have to get used to peeing in cups, giving blood, and giving up some dignity.
When you go to get the blood drawn, let them know you tend to pass out, and they'll lie you down while they take it. I'm sure they can take blood from another area if you explain your last experience.

The first prenatal visit is the most thorough. A complete medical history is taken, a physical examination is conducted, as well as certain tests and procedures are performed to assess the initial health of the mother and the embryo. The first prenatal visit may include the following:

personal medical history - this may include taking record of any of the following:

previous and current medical conditions - such as diabetes, high blood pressure (hypertension), anemia, and/or allergies

current medications - prescription and over-the-counter

previous surgeries

maternal and paternal family medical history - including illnesses such as diabetes or mental retardation, and genetic disorders such as sickle-cell disease or Tay-Sachs disease

personal gynecological and obstetrical history - including past pregnancies - stillbirths, miscarriage, deliveries, terminations - and menstrual history (i.e., length and duration of menstrual periods)

education - including a discussion regarding the importance of proper nutrition, regular exercise, the avoidance of alcohol, drugs, and tobacco during pregnancy, and a discussion of any concerns about domestic violence

pelvic examination - this type of examination may be performed for one/all of the following reasons:

to note the size and position of the uterus

to determine the age of the fetus

to check the pelvic bone size and structure

to perform a Pap test (also called Pap smear) to detect the presence of abnormal cells

laboratory tests - including the following:

urine tests - to screen for bacteria, sugar, and protein

blood tests - to determine blood type
All pregnant women are tested for the Rh factor during the early weeks of pregnancy. A mother and fetus may have incompatible blood types, the most common is Rh incompatibility. Rh incompatibility occurs when the mother's blood is Rh-negative and the father's blood is Rh-positive and the fetus' blood is Rh-positive. The mother may produce antibodies against the Rh-positive fetus which may lead to anemia in the fetus. Incompatibility problems are monitored and appropriate medical treatment is available to prevent the formation of Rh antibodies during pregnancy.

blood screening tests - to detect diseases (i.e., rubella, also called German measles)

genetic tests - to detect inherited diseases (i.e., sickle-cell anemia, Tay-Sachs disease)

screening tests - to detect infectious diseases (i.e., sexually transmitted diseases)
The first prenatal visit is also an opportunity to ask any questions or discuss any concerns that you may have about your pregnancy.

Yes, you will have to have blood drawn and you certainly have the right to ask them not to take it from the bend of your elbow. They can often get it on the back of your hand or on your arm between your wrist and elbow.
