depends whether it a mexican squire. They are the cheaper of the the two. same electronics but the tuners go out of tune way too easy. go with the yamaha over the mexican squire. if it's not the mexican one, it's a toss up.

the way to tell if it's mexican is if it's $150 cheaper new.

I think the Squier is Fender's low end Strat copy. Good for a beginner.. Not familiar with that model Yamaha. I've heard Mike Stern play his(Yamaha) and it sounds awesome. Matter of fact. Stern could play the Squier and would make that sound good too. Go to the local Guitar Center or large music store and play both guitars..

Really, it depends on your personal taste. Each guitar has a different set of pickups, which equals a different sound.

Personally, however, I dislike Squier. I'm more of a Fender and Ibanez man, and I'm partial to Yamaha. My first bass was Yamaha, and it played beautifally until it broke.

I'd say the Yamha for me, but narry a one can touch my Martin or ESP!
