i've just started wrestling on my school's team. most of the people i've wrestled so far have had years of practice. i would love to be able to hold my own against them, as soon as possible... does anyone know a way i can get better quickly? preferably other than weight training.

weight training is far from the answer. the best thing to do when just starting is to learn basically 12 moves and master them. Three from Neutral for example double or single shot, head locks, fireman's carry, duck unders, or arm drags; three from top, three from bottom and three pinning techniques. find your favorites the moves that work best for you and practice them over and over.
the other best thing to do is to practice with the best kid on your team. granted you'll constantly get beat but you'll see tons of moves and also learn to fall and anticipate your opponent which will build your defense. Sadly with wrestle there is seldom a "fast" way to greatness or even goodness (not the right word but you know what I mean). You just have to work at it and remember when it comes to training its better to be strong and fast then just strong or fast.
lastly, train in the off season and go to camps over summer.

I have been wresting since I was 6 yrs old and now I'm 22 it is all about practice make perfect and every time you practice you have to do the moves in so many reputations that you will remember that move so when your out in a match you don't look stupid cause you don't know any moves it is definitely not all about weight lifting or strength it about knowing your moves and and hitting them precisely with out failure the faster the better... GOOD LUCK

Well you wont get as good as they are quick but keep working at it.Dan Gable was one of the best wrestlers ever and he said he practiced all the time because he knew that was what the Russians were doing. He only lost 1 career college match ever and he only lost that by 1 point. So work hard and things will come together for you.

Practice Practice Practice. There are no shortcuts to success. And definitely don't do the juice. I know to many people whose lives were cut short due to cancer or heart trouble from steroid use.

Definitely see your coach. He would be the best person to give you advice.
