My little one seems to be on a hunger strike and although I don't want to make food an issue by focusing too much on getting her to eat I must admit I am concerned. Part of the issue may be the fact that she strongly prefers self-feeding and has taken to refusing anything that comes on a spoon the majority of the time. Her only teeth are in the front so my finger food options are limited.

Children will naturally stop eating when they are full, and will not let themselves starve. It doesn't matter that her only teeth are in the front because babies learn to mash food with their gums. If she prefers to feed herself, try giving her pasta, beans, soft fruits cut into small pieces, and veggies like peas, or corn on the cob. My daughter LOVED to eat the corn off the cob. Graham crackers in small pieces are good, soft cheeses and scrambled eggs...all healthy and easy to be chewed with her gums.

I was about to ask this for my 12 month old daughter. She is average on the weight side, though the doc says its a good thing because she is healthy otherwise, it bothers me. Its all because of her teething and self feeding etc. that she hasnt gained well in the last 2 months. I have started making all her meals 'self feeding' kind - like scrambled eggs, soft bread with cream cheese as a sandwich, mince chicken stew (i give her the boiled chicken and potato pieces to eat on her own) - but i also keep a bowl ready to try and put in few spoonfuls while she is occupied or when she opens her mouth for the piece in her hand. i know that sounds like i am cheating her but there is no choice, with babies i have realized that mommies have to come up with novel and slightly unfair ideas to get their meals in their tummies. dont worry though EVERYONE tells me babies eat as much as they want but i can understand that as a mom thats not totally acceptable because my lovely bundle can skip a meal and be happy. lastly, i am at my wits end with this finger food business, my daughter has only 2 lower front teeth, the upper two are coming in, so everything seems like it will choke her, I hardly give her any finger foods right now, just soft, pulpy stuff.

She will eat what she needs. There is no certain amount that a child should eat. Everyone is different with different metabolisms. Don't worry about it, just feed her healthy food.

My mom says to try soft mashed potatoes with a little salt pepper and butter. It should feel your little one up and also try apple sauce.
Soft scrambled eggs is also an option.
Hope that helps
Good luck
