to solve this inequality you want to end up with either x greater than a number or x less than a number. You should know that if you do anything (ie add subtract multiply, etc) to one side of an equation you have to do the same to the other. You use this fact to get your answer.

The first (easiest) thing to do is to take 2 away from both sides, which gives, 5x > -10

Next we have to reduce 5x to just x, so to do this we have to divide both sides of the equation by 5. This gives us our answer that x is greater than -2.

My goodness...you just transported me back to my gcse maths class. Wierd! So..what can i remember? if im correct...this is how it should work:

2 + 5x > -8
(-2 from left onto right side)
5x > -10
(divide 5 from left onto right side)
Answer: x = -2

(-2 > -8)

So basically...get rid of everything from left and do it to the right.
I hope thats correct...or all those years of maths lessons did me no good :)
