What was before the Universe was a slot where the Universe was to fit.
The Universe did not fly from some where and land into a slot.
The matter in the Universe required manufacture and the components had to be made to form a structure.
The whole architecture of the Universe came into being after a long planning back into eternity. This implies Our Creator.
The construction was than second nature and did take place in a short time.
Science had to come to a conclusion that the Universe did not create itsef and formed into an architeccture by itself. If it is not believed as so than who can indicate otherwise.?

Three theories about what was there before:
1. Nothing
2. God living in some other god's universe
3. Something the human mind is incapable of imagining
It has been predicted that within a few decades technology will allow us to see the edges of the expanding universe. I dont know how we'll know what we're looking at but...
The universe formed from the Big Bang and there is still measureable background ratiation and thermal energy from this event. I'm not an expert but would suggest Stephen Hawking's book, A Brief History of Time which is a pretty well written (by physicist standards) summary of current theory.

You have asked an excellent question and can be answered with the "Steady State Theory". From my limited knowledge of the theory, I think it means our Universe has always existed and there was no so-called "Big Bang". So unlike the Big Bang theory which cannot explain what existed before the bang, the Steady State Theory eliminates this problem by implying there was no beginning but a continuation of existence. But to answer your question, the Universe did not come from somewhere, because it has always existed and hopefully will continue doing so !

with the universe being about 14 billion yrs.
old and expanding one must contemplate
what was the beginning, yet if this were so
we would need a birthplace in space! There
is no evidence of any asymmetry, and since
Einstein's general relativity shows space &
time to be flexible and not fixed then we have a
problem, did the universe have a beginning
with one point in time or is it the whole of
space expanding outward, if so, then there
may not be a particular point in time which we
can go back and say, this is where and how
it all began., and that Einstein's general relativity
seemingly shows areas of space symmetrically
stretching, what was before the universe?
Who can say for time is thought, time is a
perception of the human mind, in space, time
does not need clocks because everything
is relevent to obsevation and location of matter
in motion.

The Big Bang Theory could be wrong. The universe may have had no beginning and has no end and is an infinite universe, not one of finite stars, galaxies, planets, gases, etc. Human beings have always tended to think in finite terms. Those are easier to comprehend and deal with.

the universe was formed by the big bang, but by conservation of mass (mass can't be spontaneously created), all the matter that makes up the universe has always been around in some form or another. from what I understand, before this universe was another universe, and another, etc - a series of big bangs and big crunches.

The universe is the result of a single space-time pulse that occurred some time after time zero.
Before zero time nothing existed except a potential.
I guess you would have to deal with zero being finite.
likely we will have to accept something that is unanswerable.

It is written, in the beginning....
So NOTHING existed (except G*d) as far as we know.
G*d then created the universe, stars, heaven, heavenly beings, creatures, and then finally, his crowning creation MAN! And then, uhh, woman!
Get this! Everything was made FOR MAN! And uuhh, woman.
Eternal life, G*d's gift wll now be given to men! And uhhh, woman
in the coming end of this age! For those that qualify.

first god.
but theres a theory that all started by a big explosion..
the universe was in a ball not bigger than your finger and it got so much pressure and gravity that it suddenly exploded and formed the galaxyes....and now it keeps getting bigger...
