"Casino Royale," by Ian Fleming. But it was nothing like the spoof of a few years ago with Woody Allen. Also, in the book, James Bond plays chemin de fer, not baccarat or poker.

This question has been asked already, and is, in fact, in voting. You should have looked it up in the database. Of course, it would be easier to find the answer in an encyclopedia.

But I digress...

Ian Fleming's "Casino Royale," the first Bond novel, copyrighted 1953.

"James Bond suddenly knew he was tired. He always knew when his body or his mind had had enough, and he always acted on the knowledge. This helped him to avoid staleness and the sensual bluntness that breeds mistakes." -- second paragraph.

Ignore the obligatory thumbs-down by the stalker who's been doing that to every answer I have given on any question in the last couple of weeks.
