You can never go wrong with candy and flowers.

First, buy a Valentine's Day card. Make sure you read the card and know what it's saying. There are many great cards written that can speak what you feel. There are many stupid cards written that can ruin your night!!!!

Go to a flower shop and get her a red rose, perhaps with some baby's breath - they'll put it in a nice small vase for you. Some of the grocery stores have single flowers you can buy. You are not being cheap - you are putting a lot of thought into making this special.

Also, buy a candle or two to set the mood. You don't even have to go out to dinner. While you are at the grocery store, pick up some strawberries, whipped cream (the kind in the can) and some chocolate sauce.

Make her a CD of all the songs the two of you like.

Get the picture? If you think she is going to want you to splurge on jewelry or something like that, there are many places that you can find a really pretty delicate necklace for her, probably under $20.

I think you're covered - gosh, can I be your girlfriend??? I think I'm in love....

Score points-skip undies and the like, that is what guys want-most women know this and see the gift as "you think I can see you in this soon". Even if your relationship is too that point-dont be a cad about it. Try comfy jammies and a DVD. Or send her flowers to work-trust me we like to show off that we were remembered on V Day! And you don't have to do roses! Talk to a florist now and give her your price range-they can work with you to find a nice unique arrangement that will be great. Candy is a little old hat-skip it. Don't jump the gun on jewlery unless you have been together a while. If you have, try simple stuff or maybe pearls, as they aren't super expensive. Good luck.

Necklace, earings, candy, flowers, teddy bear, ipod shuffle, gift certificate to a nice salon, bath & body/victoria secret lotions and body sprays, nice bottle of wine, photo of you and her in an specially-engraved frame, dinner & movie, tickets to a comedy club, the movie "The Devil Wears Prada", a good book she's been wanting to read, spa quality slippers and bathrobe... these are just some of the things I personally would appreciate as a gift from a boyfriend.

Depends. What does she like? The best gifts are not the most expensive, but ones that are personal. If you have a "song" you might want to give her the CD, or perhaps you were in the mall one day and caught her admiring something, you could buy it for her. Does she like to read? Get her a book. Does she like to do her nails? Get her a gift certificate for a manicure and pedicure at a nice spa. If she likes to cook, get her an herb garden.

Whatever you get her, make sure it's a thoughtful gift. We women hate getting roses from the grocery store and silly Hallmark cards. Your gift should say, "I'm paying attention to what you like and it matters to me."

A single rose and a love poem is a romantic gift. Here's one poem you could use:

A White Rose
by John Boyle O'Reilly

THE red rose whispers of passion,
And the white rose breathes of love;
O, the red rose is a falcon,
And the white rose is a dove.

But I send you a cream-white rosebud
With a flush on its petal tips;
For the love that is purest and sweetest
Has a kiss of desire on the lips

These quote from the poem "She walks in beauty like the night" and would be a romantic way to say you think she's beautiful:

The full poem is here:

(The second stanza describes a woman with dark hair, so if you send her the full poem, and she's blond, she might not appreciate it so much...but you could include a note with the first stanza:

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies,
And all that's best of dark and bright
Meets in her aspect and her eyes;
Thus mellow'd to that tender light
Which Heaven to gaudy day denies.)

A search on any search engine for "love poems" will bring you back a ton, and you can find one that suits her.

Make her a basket full of her favorite things so that she knows that you put some effort into it and she will know that you pay alot of attention to what makes her happy.Find a teddy bear in her favorite color, Her favorite movie, make a CD of her favorite artists,put a 6 pack of her favorite soda, her favorite snack, a favorite book(write something sweet and endearing in the book)buy a little momento that will remind her of something that the two of you did together or a place you visited together.Try to do something special from the heart dont buy cheap perfume or just flowers, make it personal. Hope you and your girlfriend have Many great Valentines together!

As for romantic gifts, a box of good chocolate is always a hit.

I am though, inclined towards more practical gifts. What does she like ? If you shop sales, you might be able to get a good cashmere sweater for that price. Give her something she will use and/or something that will last a long time.

A lovely present is a gift certificate for a spa, or a pedicure. But make sure you get a card or something to let her know you acknowledge the day, and spend time with her, that's important.
