Depends on what symptoms your experiencing. Alot of the time, when someone's throat is irritated it is because fluids from your nasal cavaties are draining down the back of your throat, irritating the tissue. Also, coughing acts as an irritant and doest more harm then good.

Can be a bacterial infection of the tissues in the back of the throat and the tonsils. The tissues become irritated and inflamed, causing a sudden, severe sore throat or "scratchy throat".

You can cut your throat from the inside out, such as when you eat a piece of apple too hard. The scratchy feeling is the wound, and over time, how it heals up.

Here's an easy way to explain it. While you are thinking about this, you may be scratching your head in confusion, if so, just think of what that feels like. OK, got it? Now pretend that is your throat, and you get a pretty dorky idea what it's like. Now, if you're not scratching your head, then start scratching it, or your butt, whatever works for you. I hope this helped.
