I strongly agree kentata said. Mexico City has a bad, undeserved reputation.

I visited Mexico City last December and not once felt "threatened". Lots of museums, lots of architechture (from Ancient Aztecs to modern skyscrapers), restaurants, galleries, theatres, parks.

And yes, there are some parts of Mexico City that are dangerous. What did you expect from a 22 million metro city? (the actual population in the Mexico City boundaries is 9 million). But if you have some common sense, you will know which parts of the city you must avoid.

I don't know what kind of tourism you want to do, but the last time, I spent all my time in museums and theatres. Some interesting ones are:

El Chopo (museum)
Polyforum Siqueiros (theatre)
Auditorio Nacional (t)
Soumaya (m)
San Ildefonso (m)
Bellas Artes (t&m)
Teatro Insurgentes(t) (I saw Victor Victoria with the mexican actress Daniela Romo. Impressive!)

I suggest that you visit:

Have a good time!

PS. Don't listen to stupid comments from people who say "MC is horrible. Oh, btw, I've never been there" ¬¬ DUH!

Yes, Its very very beautiful and like many others have mentioned it has alot of beautiful places to see and visit. I was on a tour with an older couple from Canada and they mentioned that they had heard that Mexico City was dirty and dangerous. They said it was nothing compared to what they had heard. They loved visiting Mexico City as well as I did. On this trip I also visited Acapulco, Taxco and Cuernavaca. Mexico City was the best and was sad to leave. You have to experience Mexico City for yourself. Don't be discouraged by what others have to say. Just remember everyone has their own opinions and experiences. Make your own judgment.

You wouldn't visit the Bronx at night if you visit New York, right? Well Mexico City, as any other city in the whole world has dangerous places, but the "touristic" part of the City is really nice, you can go to museums, parks, historical places and you will enjoy it.

I lived there for 30 years, is my Home City ^.^

I have been there twice. Sure it's not as safe as some other places I have visited (like Canada), but it's not at all so bad that everyone should avoid it. I wouldn't say I felt particularly unsafe at any point in time. There are many fun things to do there, and it is a very cheap place to take a vacation; you can eat at a 4-star restaurant for the equivalent of $10-12 USD.

Yes, many times. The main boulevard, the Reforma, is beautiful. Chapultepec Park is wonderful and houses one of the best archeological/anthropological museums in the world. The zocalo, the main square is the 2nd largest in the world, and is the location of the fabulous National Cathedral, ruins of the ancient city of Tenochtitlan, and the viceregal palace, which houses Diego Rivera murals. That just scratches the surface. It's a fabulous city.
