Get another cat...I know, I know...my mom told me not to do it right away too but my college cat was hit by a car about a year after moving to my 'city job' and I lasted about a month before I went to the shelter and met my new best friend. In fact...he's trying to type his agreement right now (he's a big help when I'm using the computer). He reminds me of all the things I love(d) about Ash Lynn but has a personality all his own!

why not another cat? Go to the shelter. Something will catch your eye. How bout a ferret. They are sort of a cross between a cat and a dog. And they don't get on the counters like cats do. They are playful and can be trained too. They're a blast. Since youre used to a litter box that is pretty much the only maintenence other then to clean the cage out on occassion. good luck.

Most small animals are NOT low maintence. You need to clean the cage everyday or it smell and play with it a lot or it will be unsocial. If you get a cat or a dog get one from the animal shelter so you don't have to go through the kitty and puppy stages.

Sorry about your cat. I think it's best if you adopt an animal from your local shelter. Pets at the shelter need tender loving care and since you are open for a new pet, why don't you adopt one fro there? Get recommendations from the volunteers on what types of animals you should get. I think cats or dogs or small pets should do fine.

Why not another cat, or better yet, two. Cats are wonderful companions, as you are well aware and pretty low maintenance. Keep their litter box clean, keep a supply of kibble in their dish with nice fresh water nearby and they are as happy as clams. If you get two cats, they can keep each other company while you are out of the house. Losing a pet can be sad and their dying can leave a hole in your life.

i'm so sorry for your loss. my dog Nina just died in april and i'm still not over it, far from it. i did get another dog 2 weeks later. it was too early for me, but the rest of my family really needed to adopt another dog. i'm now glad that we did. i'm starting to love the new dog (kelso). i'm sure that Nina would have wanted us to save another dog. hamsters are low maintenance but i think you may find deep in your heart that a new cat is what you may need. it's not like your replacing your old cat, you'll just be giving a new cat a loving home. visit your local shelters, you may cry, but i think you might figure out what your heart really needs. good luck and my deepest sympathy.

Gerbils! I am totally surprised at how much fun they are! They are very social, so you'll have to get 2. But they don't smell, I clean their cage about every 2 weeks. They're inexpensive. You can get a little playpen and make them a playground and they have so much fun. Mine are friendly and cute! Seriously!
Here are some sites that will introduce you:

The best pet to get with low maintenance is to get a fish. you know, they don't cost very much and they don't need much care.
Have a terrific day!
Best I could do!
